I discovered yoga only a few months ago. Sure, I’ve heard of it. And yes, the celebrity blogs often capture Jennifer Anniston, Madonna, Gwyneyth Paltrow, Jessica Biel, and Gisele Bunchen (to name a few) strolling in and out of yoga studios with their yoga mats rolled up under their arms and wearing the latest in yoga fashion. How about the insane poses that Hilaria Baldwin has frequently posted online. But I have to admit, I completely underestimated how difficult it is, how much it can tone and strength your body, and how great it is for your mind and spirit.
I had always enjoyed taking boot camp and body pump at the gym and I love to run outdoors. However, as winter approached, running outdoors in the frigid Pittsburgh weather was not something I look forward to doing. I wanted to try something new. So, in February, I took introductory classes (30 days for $30) at Salt Power Yoga in Seven Fields, PA. It was intense and amazing!
I was a bit intimidated at first. However, the classes are for all levels so I felt comfortable that I would not be the only novice in attendance. They are HOT yoga classes, but the environment was warm and friendly! The instructors facilitated power vinyasa routines that are challenging enough for long-time yogis, yet allowed all levels to adapt to their personal practice. By the end of my introductory session I rolled it into a regular membership.
Today my practice involves pushing myself to my limits and then striving to go just a bit further. I still struggle with crow pose, but I told my favorite instructor today that I will be able to float into it by next month. I’m determined. I feel myself getting stronger and stronger each week and I love the lean muscles I am developing. I hope to be able to continue this journey and practice for many years to come.
If you have not tried yoga, I encourage you to try it at least once. If you are new to yoga, I wish you well with your practice. If you are a seasoned yogi, I hope to be just like you!
