Working out in a gym is not always an option. You may not belong to one because of price or distance. Or, perhaps your schedule is tight and you’re just not able to squeeze in a trip. But don’t let that be an excuse to skip a workout all together. The good news is that a home workout routine is a great alternative to the traditional gym workout.
If you have not done so already, check out my post on the 9 Home Gym Basics. Next, follow these suggestions to get the most from your home workout.
Plan, Plan, Plan. Determine the amount of time that you have what type of exercise you would like to do. For example, I have 3-mile, 4-mile, and 5-mile routes mapped out around my home. I also know how long it takes me to run each route. If it is a cardio day, I select a route depending on the amount of time I have. I also have go-to workout videos of varying lengths for upper body, lower body, and full body. If you want to use free weights, plan out a few routines with the amount of sets, reps, and weights you use. Get creative! The idea is to ensure that you maximize your workout within the allotted time available.
Incorporate variety. When you work out at home, it is very easy to fall into a routine and do the same thing over and over despite your plans. After awhile, you will not only get bored and de-motivated, but you will not see the results you desire. What’s happening? Well, your body adapts to an exercise if you stay with it for too long. Therefore, make sure to mix in some variety in your workout plans to maximize your results with your efforts.
Find an accountability partner. This could be a friend, family member, or even a personal trainer who will provide support and encouragement. When you are held accountable, you are more likely to keep workout commitments and achieve your fitness goals.
With planning, variety, and accountability, your home workout can be as effective and tough as a gym workout. AND REMEMBER, give it 100% effort! Anything less is cheating yourself.
