Goal setting. The secret of getting ahead is . . .

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” ~ Mark Twain

It’s amazing to think that 2015 is almost in the history books.  If you are like me, you probably set some goals for yourself at the beginning of the year and somehow time got away from you.  But that does not mean it is too late to take another look and make a fresh start.  Here are some tips that helped me:

Keep your list small and focused.  I can be very ambitious in all of the things I want to accomplish in a given day.  But that can be overwhelming and too stressful!  A better approach that works for me is to prioritize and focus on 1-3 items key items that will be impactful.

Be realistic.  This is the hard part!  Most of us are very impatient and want the end result that we have in our minds STAT! And when that does not happen it can be extremely de-motivating.  Instead, you have to be realistic in what you want to accomplish and the amount of time it is going to take to get you there.  You may have to do so research here. What is it you are trying to accomplish?  What resources do you need?  Do you have access to those resources? What is the time commitment? What, if any, barriers do anticipate?  How can you overcome those barriers?  Ask yourself these questions and be truthful with yourself in determining if your goal is truly attainable.

Establish Key Milestones.   Once you have your goals in mind, you should plot out the steps needed to get you there.  This is the fun part! Yes, really.   It helps you to stay focused. Use any type of system that works for you to keep yourself on track.

Don’t be hard on yourself.  Yes, you will stumble and mess up along the way.  Life happens, priorities shift, we lose focus, and there are distractions galore.  You already know that!  So when you find yourself offtrack, just re-focus and continue to move forward.

Celebrate your successes along the way!  We all have our routines so making any sort of change is hard work.  But each step you take is progress and each day that passes brings you closer to the goals you set out for yourself.  So take the time to acknowledge that and give yourself a little reward.   This will help to keep you motivated and moving in the right direction.
